Dance at Western Oregon University. Students work with professional faculty in a supportive environment to encourage artistic development, educational, cultural enrichment, and intellectual growth in the field of dance. One distinguishing characteristic of the WOU dance program is its partnership with Rainbow Dance Theater. Select students can participate in paid internships, earn a degree in dance, and gain professional experience touring nationally and internationally with this professional touring modern dance company. All dance majors take Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Dance Partnering technique classes, and learn to care for their bodies through Wellness for Dancers, Conditioning, and Kinesiology courses. The curriculum covers composition, production, teacher training, and dance history. There are three optional concentrations including Dance Education & Studio Management; Dance Film & Technology; and Dance Performance & Choreography.
Graduates of the Western Oregon University Dance Program have successful careers in several areas of the dance field including dance company members, choreographers, dance studio owners, dance professors, dance-movement therapists, somatic practitioners, dance historians, photographers, critics, and arts administrators. Dancers who come through the program at Western Oregon University are people who want to keep dance a part of their lives for the rest of their lives in some way shape or form. If that resonates with you, reach out to us.
