Students attending Illinois State University may pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in with Dance or Dance Teacher Education. Both sequences include coursework in improvisation, composition, dance history, rhythmic fundamentals, dance kinesiology and multicultural perspectives in dance. The dance program highlights three performance areas—modern/contemporary dance forms, classical ballet, and jazz dance—which are emphasized equally through a detailed and rigorous curriculum. A notable component of the program is the exposure to varied aspects of theatrical production and technology. Courses in creative technology, acting, stage make-up, costume design and light design complement the dancers’ curriculum. Both sequences are based on our belief that creative, theoretical, and kinesthetic work will merge to support the students’ growth as dance artists and educators. The dance performance sequence includes rigorous study in both technical and choreographic forms, concluding with a capstone senior seminar that assists students in creating individualized plans for their professional goals.
The Dance Teacher Education sequence leads to licensure in the public-school system and offers a diverse range of clinical experiences and pedagogical studies to prepare students for ta final semester of student teaching. The Dance Program hosts a pre-professional dance company, Dance Theatre, which produces two main-stage performances each academic year, showcasing faculty and guest-artist choreography.
Acceptance into either of the dance majors is based on an audition that includes a technique class of varying styles, a solo presentation and an interview.
